Record Breaking Fundraiser: $1.8 Million Raised at 2024 Mike McCann Charity Golf Tournament
This year’s 24th annual Mike McCann Charity Golf Tournament broke records with its $1,802,000 fundraising total – 100% of which will be donated directly back to deserving charities throughout Ontario, BC, and Québec.
Over two decades since the first tournament was held in Ottawa, raising a cool $3000 at the time, the event continues to evolve thanks to the support of an ever-growing group of business leaders, sponsors, partners, volunteers, charities, friends and family from across Canada. Since its inception, the tournament has always been firmly rooted in the power of our communities, dedicated to raising funds for the vital services and organizations within them.
Its cumulative fundraising total is now nearing the $10 million mark, and the annual tournament has proudly become one of the largest private charity events nationwide.
Honoring Mike McCann
The planning of CLV Group and InterRent REIT’s annual fundraiser, originally established in 1998, was spearheaded for many years by Mike McCann. He was the driving force behind the event for almost two decades, always passionate about the importance of giving back. Mike was a deeply cherished friend and a well-known business leader in Ottawa who lost his battle with cancer in 2019.
“Mike McCann’s legacy lives on through this event, and we are committed to making it bigger, better, and more impactful each year,” shared Mike McGahan, CEO at CLV Group and Executive Chairman of InterRent REIT. “The overwhelming support from our sponsors and participants is what allows us to make a positive difference in our communities. We wouldn’t be able to do this without our partners – it's their generosity and shared commitment to the community that truly makes it all possible.”
To commemorate the life and legacy of Mike and the impact he had on his community, the tournament was renamed in his honour in 2019. His extraordinary charisma, dedication, and passion continues to inspire the tournament, making it a vibrant and memorable fundraiser that grows each year.
Event Day – September 19, 2024
With over 450 golfers, the sold-out 2024 tournament once again spanned across two local courses: The Meadows Golf & Country Club and Anderson Links. Coach buses were on site to make transportation a breeze, and golfers began arriving at The Meadows at 10 AM in preparation for an 11:30 shotgun start. Upon arrival, attendees enjoyed breakfast from No Go Coffee Co., Farm Boy, and Tim Hortons (donated once again by The Snowsuit Fund). Before hitting the greens, each golfer was also fueled up by the delicious lunch options provided by popular local deli Subito.
Throughout the morning, Pure Country 94 kept the vibes high with country music and live broadcasting on site. Each course featured a variety of different contests and prizes, including closest to the pin and hole-in-one, generously supported by our sponsors. This year, there was not one, not two, but four hole-in-one luxury car prizes on the course thanks to Mark Motors, Surgenor, and Meyers.
Across both courses, we were honored to welcome representatives from The Royal Ottawa, Sun Youth, The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, Christie Lake Kids, BGC Ottawa, Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa, Shepherds of Good Hope, The Ottawa Senators Foundation, and The Ottawa Food Bank. Their presence allowed participants to connect directly with the charities they were supporting. Other beneficiaries of this year’s tournament include Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa, the Oak Park Neighborhood Centre, Moose Hide Campaign, and many more.
Reception and Celebration
The highly anticipated evening portion of the event kicked off with delicious local eats from a variety of food trucks, including Angry Dragonz, Biagio’s Kitchen and Catering, Si Senor, Beavertails, Farinella, Falafel on Wheels, Foodie Lu, and Lucy’s Hot Fries. The silent auction, open throughout the day until 7 PM, was a hotspot during dinner and featured over 100 fabulous items including an Alfa Ciao Wood Fired Pizza Oven from Preston Hardware, 12 Month Diamond Experience at Altea Fitness + Wellness Club, and a Master Classic Swivel Reclining Chair & Footstool.
After enjoying the many great eats provided by our local partners, more than 500 guests settled in under the tent for the awards ceremony, speeches, and annual live auction that featured ground floor Taylor Swift tickets and a NFL/NHL/concert trip to Vegas. A 50/50 winner was also drawn, leaving the event with a whopping $9000 prize.
Fundraising for Impact
This year’s keynote address was then delivered on behalf of The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. The Royal has been a beneficiary of the tournament for many years, and guest speaker Julia bravely detailed her personal experience receiving cognitive behavioral therapy at The Royal during her youth and early adulthood. Her story of The Royal’s impact on her own life and mental health inspired the crowd, serving as a poignant reminder of why the event is held in the first place and how the donations create meaningful change in our communities.
With anticipation in the air, Mike McGahan (CEO of CLV Group and Executive Chairman of InterRent REIT) took to the stage to deliver his own annual speech, thanking the event’s sponsors and planning committee for their dedication to the event year after year. Joined by team members from both companies, the grand fundraising total was revealed via ceremonial cheque. An outstanding, record-breaking $1,802,000 total.
